Mind the Gap

Mind the Gap
When I was in college, I spend a semester studying abroad in London, experiencing the marvel of public transportation through my dependence on buses, trains, and underground rail to get me around the country.  For a formerly car-dependent transplant, the novelty of this stuck with me and one particular saying, printed on t-shirts, painted on concrete, and spoken over the speakers, still instantly elicits memories of my time there: Mind the Gap.  For some reason, this slogan of sorts surfaced from my memories today.  The more I read about formative assessment, the more I am meditating on the need to Mind the Gap between what my students currently know and are able to do and what they will be able to accomplish as a result of deliberate instruction and learning. It is through minding the gap that I can better develop next steps for individuals, small groups, and the whole class.  Minding the gaps will help me to respond with instruction and intervention before the gaps become chasms.
